I find the different Biokleen detergent options a bit confusing, but their own website explains it pretty well. There are three options: 1) Free and Clear is the most popular option and contains a number of basic ingredients such as sodium carbonate, surfactants, hydrogen peroxide, etc. 2) Citrus Essence contains all the ingredients of Free and Clear plus an extra : orange peel extract. The only difference is the smell. 3) Premium Plus contains free and clear ingredients plus three others: Orange Peel Extract, Proteases (which are enzymes that can break down protein stains on clothing) and Oxygen Bleach (which is Sodium Percarbonate). ). So it all boils down to this: if you don't want a citrus scent, go for Free and Clear. Of the remaining two options, if you don't mind the smell, I would recommend Premium Plus. This is what I am currently using. A few words about other ingredients: Proteases are produced by fermentation (yeast or bacteria) and do not pollute the environment. Oxygen bleach is sodium percarbonate, which is actually a mixture of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. Sodium carbonate is made from salt and limestone and is environmentally friendly, while hydrogen peroxide is made from water and air using a catalyst (which is recycled) and then breaks down into water during washing. Detergents from Biokleen, but they have since received more information on the formulations and have upgraded them to an 'A' for human safety. The EWG is sketchy at times โ in this case they gave it a D because the ingredient "surfactantโ can be made up of a thousand things, some of which are harmful. Now that they know the exact surfactant in the product, they rate it as safe. The composition of Biokleen Premium Plus is very similar to that of Seventh Generation, except that Seventh Gen's product contains additional enzymes (amylase for starch stains). I like this company too, but I haven't tried their washing powder. I find the trend towards ultra-convenient products like Tide Pods disturbing. Are we really too lazy or unable to dose detergent? The gel that coats these capsules is a concern, and there's no need to use bright dyes to make their detergent more attractive either. The water-soluble gel used in pods is polyvinyl alcohol, made from polymers of vinyl acetate, which Dow Chemical says is "highly toxic to fish" and can cause cancer. Is it worth the risk of not measuring a scoop of detergent? Also, P&G still does some animal testing - not for Tide, but I still don't want to support it. I think Biokleen is one of the most socially and environmentally responsible laundry detergents on the market. They buy wind energy credits to offset their energy use, and they also contribute to a river water restoration project (and use cold water in their Washington DC manufacturing process). Their ingredients and finished products are not tested on animals, and they use compostable or recyclable materials for much of their packaging. Biokleen detergents are extremely concentrated, which reduces energy costs for shipping and packaging material (which consists of at least a cardboard box and a plastic bag). A note on product concentration: some people have reported that their clothes smell bad (or hardly at all). like the smell before washing) after washing, even if they use twice as much detergent. Using more detergent than recommended is actually the cause of odors as you end up leaving excess surfactant on your clothes. You can think of this surfactant as fat that becomes rancid (smelly) and encourages bacterial growth. I use a half scoop in a front loading HE washing machine and have no complaints. Overall, I prefer the Premium Plus option, but I also like the Free and Clear and Citrus Essence options. I rate them all 5/5 gold stars for price and quality and 5/5 green stars for social and environmental responsibility.
