Review on Silicon Power Shockproof Water Resistant Anti Scratch by Scott Rodriguez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Reliable, durable and lightweight USB 3.0 travel drive

Overall this is a great drive for the price and storage. I bought this drive for the sole purpose of editing my video and photo files on the go and moving from PC to PC without uploading huge gigabyte files to the cloud. Here are my findings: The drive is quite small and light. I've used a few LaCie hard drives in the past and they can be quite bulky. This drive fits easily in a thin neoprene laptop sleeve or even in a jacket pocket. (see photos). The marketing says it's scratch resistant, but I don't see that as a reality. The plastic case on top and bottom is your standard ABS so I'm sure you can get a scratch or dent or 2 over time. The USB connector on the drive itself is a full-size USB-C type connector, and it's colored blue on the right (Pantone 300), indicating that it's actually a USB 3.0 connector. The box says USB 3.1 Gen 1, but that confused me because USB 3.1 is technically Gen 2. I checked the speed (see photos) and it averaged 120.5 MB/s read and 122.5 MB/s write This is where the drive gets the most stars. USB 3.0 average speed tables are around 60MB/s, so the 3.1 format runs at x2 clock speed, which is almost correct compared to other 3.1 USB drives. Now to compare this for people who really need the maximum speed they can get, the average HD internal frequency is around 300MB/s, so keep that in mind. An external USB drive will not give the same results. So choose your use case for these drive types carefully. Tests on my Seagate 5TB external desktop drives, which are also USB 3.1, show that the write speeds are about the same, but the read speeds on my Seagate are only 95MB/s. The desktop computer is a 27-inch iMac i7. The hard drive is formatted as FAT32. I reformatted it to a standard Mac OS Extended (Journaled) that is Time Machine compatible so you can use it for your Mac OS backup drive. I like the convenience of attaching the USB cable to the outside so you don't have to find another place to store the cable or maybe forget everything together. Keep in mind that the clips that hold the USB cable are removable They fit in the rubber channel of the silicone case and out again if you pull hard enough on the USB cable. I don't see any reason why this should be a problem, but it's also designed not to be permanent so keep that in mind. The cable is also short. I would say 12 inch port to port. There are 2 non-slip rubber channels on the base so it doesn't slip too much on the table and the same soft silicone rubber around the edge of the disc. However, they don't protrude from the hard plastic top and bottom, so I'm not sure how effective they'll be at absorbing drop shock in corners, which are probably the most dangerous spots. Keep in mind that this drive is NOT an SSD drive (otherwise it will cost a lot more), so don't drop it while it's in use. PROS: Lightweight and fast 3.1 USB r/w Small size Convenient cable storage Low cost CONS: Not as durable as it could be. I give it 4 stars for its construction/durability. No SSD drive. If you liked my review, please give it a like.
