Review on 👓 Foster Grant James Rectangular Reading Glasses - Clear, Stylish Eyewear for Perfect Vision by Brandon Doctore

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Exclusively for musicians! Frame upgrade reduces rating

My distance vision without glasses is normal; but I have age-related presbyopia (problems with near vision). I've used readers that are good at reading, but you keep putting them on and off, leaving them in place, etc. I've had bifocal readers that were light on top and reading power on the bottom of the lens. They stay on longer, but the queue often gets in the way, especially for a musician! Notes disappear, lines are broken or missing, you turn the page too soon, etc.! These multifocals are MUCH better than varifocals (blurred on the sides and expensive!). The vision correction in these glasses is continuous (from left to right) and the transitions in the vertical direction are completely smooth. You barely notice them and adjust to the performance gap completely and almost instantly. I sing with an a cappella group, play bells, perform in a band and orchestra, and march in parades with a sheet music. In these groups, the music is at different distances from my face, so each group needs a different magnification for me to be able to read the music perfectly. I have two pairs, one is 2.75x and the other is 1.75x; One pair is for folders and portable music, the weaker pair is for bells, bands and orchestral concert performances. The price is great for covering such a range and offering such an excellent view. The James model I chose is mechanically superior to the Sawyer model I started with; The James frames are stronger and the metal-to-plastic Sawyer hinge is the weak link. Since I am writing a review for James here, I give it a full 5 stars! If they came in a sunglass version (grey lenses) I would definitely buy them! Update, July (6 months after purchase): Unfortunately, my first pair was fine from Christmas (purchase) to the summer band. In July, the frame unexpectedly broke through the nose stop for no apparent reason; My guess is that the frame is too fragile and/or the 2.5D lens was too big or thick for the frame to hold in the summer heat. The glasses are still usable, but the tear on the nose is a gap of about 1mm and "bites" the skin of the nose. I've ordered a new pair because I otherwise really like them and I'm hoping this pair was just an "accident". If the new pair snaps themselves too, I'll update my review negatively again. I'm holding back two stars because I expect readers to last longer than six months. The plastic frame should be more ductile and less brittle.

Pros
  • Non-polarized
Cons
  • Unreliable
