Versatile Backpack: Bags, Cases & Covers

I was looking for a new backpack, something I could EDC and also OneBag for a 2 week trip. I knew I wanted the Osprey based on previous experiences with their bags. But what? The Osprey has many backpacks and I've spent way too much time trying to figure out the subtle differences: Axis: • 18L • Fits a 15” laptop • One main laptop/tablet/document/organizer compartment plus a small one Zippered Pocket • Front bungee for jackets/oversized items • No straps • Standard bottle cage • Essentially a smaller Questa with one section instead of two. for laptop/tablet/main storage, a smaller compartment with organizational pockets plus a small pocket • no bungee cord/pocket at front • drawstrings at top that can be hidden • longer hidden bottle holders Questa • 26L • For 15” laptop • Two compartments, one Main compartment for laptop/tablet/memory, a smaller compartment with organizer pockets and a small pocket. • Front bungee same as Axis • Top drawstrings • Standard Comet bottle cage • 30L • Fits 15" laptops • Two compartments, one main laptop/tablet/main storage compartment, one smaller compartment with organizational compartments plus a small pocket. • Instead of a front/bungee pocket, there is a massive carry handle • Drawstring top and bottom • Standard Nova bottle holder: • 32 L • Fits a 17 inch laptop • Three compartments, one main compartment, one smaller compartment with organizational pockets , a flat TCA laptop compartment and a small pocket. • Zippered stretch mesh front pocket • Hidden drawstring straps at top and bottom • Standard bottle holder. I looked at it seriously. With the exception of Axis and Comet, all of the above packages also have a male version (Apogee, Quasar, Nebula). My daughter has an Axis so I knew it would be too small for my travels and conversely the Nova would be too big for my EDC. This left me with Aphelia, Comet, and Questa. On the Aphelia you have to undo the straps (assuming you use them, I know) to get into the front organization pocket, on the Comet and Questa you don't. . Between the Comet and the Questa I decided to use the sweater front panel more than the carry handle, also the Questa is for women and the Comet is unisex. Women's special harnesses fit a little better on narrower frames and usually have higher chest straps. So, after much deliberation, Questa won for me. This is an excellent backpack. My only complaints are that A. I would have liked another set of organizational pockets like those found in older versions of these packs, and B. the bottom of the Osprey packs are in dire need of rubber - they slide right down to the ground on everything but the carpet. C. The whole thing is quite a frustrating experience - some 1" elastic belt loops could help a lot - I've already ordered a few. A few hidden pockets would be nice too, but that's okay. Overall, I find my complaints to be extremely minor. Playing with what fits in the Questa I was very impressed: Small Compression Cube #1: • 3 Shirts • 2 Bras Small Compression Cube #2: • 4 Pairs of Socks • 4 Underwear Large Compression Cube #1: • 2 JeansLarge Compression Cube #2:Empty for dirty laundrySlim Packing Cube #1• Swimwear•Swimwear•Swimwear Bra•SandalsSlim Packing Cube #2• SweaterLiquid Toiletry Bag• Shampoo• Toothpaste• Acne Cream• Hand Lotion• Hygiene LipstickDry Makeup Bag• Soap Bars• Comb• Dental floss• Toothbrush• (forgot deodorant, hmm, still good)• MacBook Air• Tomtoc 13" laptop case• AirPod Pro headphones• Anker 30W power adapter (Anchor Atom 65W coming soon) • J- Go Tech Tanker Extreme 27,000mAh Battery • 10" USB C to USB C Cable • 6" USB C to Light Bottom Cable • 1ft USB Cable • Camelback Chute 750ml Capacity Water Bottle. • Microfiber Cloth The packing cubes I have are the Eagle Creek Pack-it Spectre. I figured it would hold everything well and easily accommodate snacks on the plane. For EDC, take the entire technical section of the packing list above and add the Fit & Fresh bento box and iPad Pro 11. Day off with the kids? Empty it and add a 3 liter water tank and three Fit & Fresh bento boxes.
