The packaging was intact but the socket had been torn off at one end and the screw had been ripped out. Even if it isn't, it's not the best design. The back is open so it doesn't look good unless it's against a wall and in fact the power socket had to be hidden somewhere, like on the lowest level of the back, to keep it looking tidy. The lamp can be plugged in directly, but you'll have to deal with a 4-foot cord lying on top or dangling from the back (tied or not). I should have evaluated these design flaws before purchasing rather than assuming they were thought through and taken into account. I'd recommend going without an outlet as you still need to manage the cords and get something with a closed back so it looks good in the room (rather than on the wall).
