Poor for front projection, fair for rear projection

The purpose of a front projection screen is to provide a flat surface that reflects light with minimal scattering. This aperture screen cannot do that. The fabric is very elastic (photo), which reduces wrinkles. The wrinkles I saw (pictured) steam out easily. This stretchy material (similar to those high school textbook "guards" that didn't actually protect the books) is also smooth and doesn't snag too much, which is a good thing. This is where the good ends. Light leaks out, even very low light (images) which means front projectors lose a lot of lumens on the screen (because it transmits light instead of reflecting it). This material could be used for rear projection, but because it is so stretchy and saggy, the density of the weave varies across the screen, creating light and dull streaks and spots. In fact, the screen is so loose and saggy that even opening and closing doors across two rooms causes a draft that creates ripples in the picture. The instructions are pretty basic, but make sure you have enough space to work. The screen comes packaged in a fairly small box (which helps keep the price down) so you'll need to assemble the bars - it takes some effort to connect them so that each final bar is the same length, and the Connectors have poor tolerances so even if you have two bars of the same length they won't look right (minor complaint, see pics). The seam broke when the sleeve was pulled over the corner connector (photo). As a result, one corner sags a little more than the others. I originally ordered it to be suspended from the ceiling (to project onto the ceiling and watch things while lying in bed) but as there is little to no tension on the frame. , I can't use it for that. If you're looking for a front projection screen in this price range look for something that uses a blackout fabric and is a stiffer fabric. Wrinkle removal may be required, but image quality will be greatly improved. To be honest even a regular cotton sheet would be better if you could control the edge stretcher or just stick it to a white wall.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Quick start guide

This is a jack leg screen. Looks like a sheet hanging on the wall.
