Useful needle threading aid, but could be improved

This device has two methods for threading a needle. The 1st method consists of inserting the needle, eye first, into a hole in the end of the device, squeezing a lever to pass a tiny wire hook through the eye, looping the thread over the hook, releasing the lever to pull the thread through the eye, then pulling the threaded needle out of the hole. With some practice, this WORKS PRETTY WELL. Getting the hook to pass through the needle eye requires some jiggling the needle to get it precisely aligned with the hook. After threading, the lever needs to be partially squeezed to release the thread trailing from the needle. The second method uses a wire hook on the end of a blade (not sharp) that stows inside the device like a pocket-knife blade. The end also has two shallow slots to aid in positioning the needle. After lowering the needle eye over he hook, the thread is looped over the hook, and the needle pulled off the hook with the thread. I found this method VERY PROBLEMATIC. You would need three hands to hold the needle, flat blade, and thread. If the blade had some way to lock it in position relative to the frame of the device, it might become useable.Gordon in Columbus, Ohio

Pros
  • Saves money on buying pre-threaded needles, which can be more expensive
Cons
  • May not work well with hand-sewn projects
