Review on ViewSonic 3DV5 Pocket 3D HD Camcorder featuring 5M FF Lens (No Longer Manufactured) by Jeremy Stephens

Well, 3-D in a way, but

As others have suggested, it's "work in progress" (at best) and wasn't ready for sale. I bet ViewSonic and others (come on, FLIP 3D!) will improve this to a level where you can get acceptable results. Unfortunately we are "not quite there". The rear screen is new and can be fun to show for a short time - you see (strangely) in the picture and nothing appears, you can show this by switching between 2D and 3D. If you're not looking at the camera itself, it's a cheap version of the red-blue technology from about 50-60 years ago. NOT the kind of camera you see "everywhere". Picture quality is fine on a small screen, but suffers when viewed on a computer or TV. The red/blue format is difficult to capture on high-end cameras, and this effect requires LOTS of light (when positioned correctly!) for the effect to even work. However, the grainy result you get with this type of work is new and hard to see. On the plus side (grin) a blurry image can age your "cast" I guess. (Who needs BOTOX when you have THIS?) The camera is plastic and quite bulky, doesn't feel or look very high quality - it's even more of a virtual twin of Aiptek's 3D unit (which is slightly better you can see). that makes me wonder if they made it and put the ViewSonic name on it. Pharmacy brand name, at the moment. BUT I see them coming up with exciting new products like mid to high end tablets and much prettier TVs. I suspect that this imperfect product was rushed to market. In summary, if you don't have to be first to market (and some of us!), you might want to wait for ViewSonic to release an improved 2G model. There are of course some excellent 2D pocket cameras from Flip and Kodak. Hope that helps! This is NOT a terrible camera, but it might not be the one you use every day.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
