My MAME Arcade has an error in my Raspberry Pi 4 that forces me to remove a few USB cables or the USB controller for Dragon's Lair isn't working. (The Pi has four USB ports.) We all know that by constantly plugging and unplugging cables, you end up damaging something. My intention was to install these cables in such a way that I no longer have to remove/insert these cables. Instead, I could just turn off that switch and simulate the cable being disconnected from the Pi. Unfortunately, these cables do not work as described. It didn't matter if the switch on those wires was on or off. The Dragon Cave didn't work. (The Dragon's Lair controller stays connected to the Pi and doesn't use that switch.) I suspect there's some quality control inconsistency because I disassembled my switch to find the red power wire that goes through the switch. In both cases, the two data lines do not go through the switch. Data can be transferred to any device you connect with this cable, even when the switch is off. Since I already disassembled the switch, I separated the ends of the red power wire from the switch and soldered them together. Then I cut one of the data lines (it doesn't matter which one) and solder those ends to the switch. It worked! I turn off the switch, reboot my Raspberry Pi and Dragon's Lair works. I turn on the switch, reboot the Pi and Dragon's Lair doesn't work. Now I don't have to mess with Pi anymore. It would be nice if I didn't have to restart the Pi every time, but that's due to the Raspberry Pi crashing. So back to quality control (or design). If one of the data wires ran through the switch instead of the ground or power wires, those wires would work as advertised. Even if the connected device has its own external power supply, there will be no communication if it cannot transmit data. If your cables are working, then you're in luck. If not, either check them again or open them and make changes. It's easy to do. You don't have to be an expert with a soldering iron.
