I've always had trouble threading a sewing machine needle. I only recently found out about these little contraptions and bought them because the reviewers said "it worked every time". Refilling that tiny eye now only takes a few seconds. As others have noted, the instructions are sketchy. Give it a try a few times and you'll get the hang of it and will rarely, if ever, be frustrated by this necessary task. When I was successful, I kept practicing for a while because it was just fun. My only complaint is the lack of protective caps on the "working end". I would welcome clear caps like the seam ripper as an unsuspecting child or adult can break them in their personal desire to play with your stuff. For those like me who want detailed instructions, here are mine. Much easier to do than read about it; but I've also attached a couple of photos: get in your car and get some decent lighting in the needle area. 1) On the busy end (the instructions say "Y" section, but it's actually more of a cross cut), hold the tool so that the arrows (the arrows are the same color as the handle and hard to see are). , I probably , sprinkled with red nail polish) aligned vertically (top and bottom). 2) Then slide some of your filament into a slightly deep horizontal slot, slide it back into the device and a taunt might come in handy). 3) Now place the busy end (with the trimmed thread) on the right side of the sewing machine needle, slowly and TIMELY push it down and lightly push it into the needle shaft. When the eye of the needle is hooked, gently push. This forces the plastic cross back into the handle and exposes a flat metal wire/rod that pushes the thread through the eye of the needle, forming a small loop. 4) You can try to catch the loop or wait, but SLOWLY release the tension by pulling the device back (away from the needle). Slowness is indeed crucial here. You manually pull the loop of thread back through the needle with the little hook on the end of the device or any other device you like (I personally use a seam ripper, the same one I use). use to pull a much larger loop off the machine's bobbins). Viola! It only takes a second and you're back in the flow. Happy sewing.
