I bought extra large as my cat likes to lie on it. He is spacious enough and numerous waves on the surface, new things for him, do not seem to bother him. The block can be flipped onto its flat side, so don't worry. The only thing that worries me/dislikes is that it's thinner than I expected. If you're carrying a heavy-duty scratching post, you might need something thicker.
