I can sew with a needle, but I prefer to use self-threading needles. They are easy to use and do not damage the thread. I often use them to hand sew with Kevlar thread for repairs. Towards the end, the tips taper off quickly. This means that if you prick yourself, it won't be as bad, unlike a beading needle, which goes in very deep.
