We have two Crane ultrasonic humidifiers. One from the "Adorable" series (penguin) and one from the "Tear" series. Both work fairly well and seem less finicky than traditional humidifiers. For the past few months we have been using a Penguin humidifier with a Crane filter and reverse osmosis filtered water in our newborn room. The humidifier only worked at night. THE ENTIRE house was covered in white powder. This was particularly concentrated on and around the television and other electronic devices. We tried buying filtered water and didn't notice any change. I spoke to the very helpful folks at Crane and they said I needed to switch to distilled water even though I cleaned the unit weekly and used filtered water and their filters. Cleaning up the white powder was a daily chore and I'm still thrilled that it can be anywhere in the house! We started buying distilled water and the problem immediately resolved itself. If you're considering one of these devices, I'd advise you to take the plunge. They are quiet and easy to use. However, you must be prepared to buy distilled water. We use 1/2 gallon each night if we run the unit from 8:00pm to 10:00am, so we buy 15 gallons of distilled water per unit per month. 1 gallon of distilled water is $0.88 at the grocery store. I have not yet found distilled water in large quantities.
