Review on Plush Orthopedic Dog Bed For Comfortable Rest - Brindle Shredded Memory Foam With Removable Washable Cover In Khaki, 40 X 26 Inches by Julia Lewis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Looks good but smells awful

Original Review May 2016: I purchased this because I foster dogs and the rescue I work with specializes in Rottweilers and Pit Bulls so sometimes we get really big dogs. I wanted something that would look good in my living room while still giving ample space for a large dog to lie down. It was also important for me to get a product with a removable cover so I could wash it between animals. Most of this dog bed is really good. The removable cover looks really nice and had a nice texture, and the bottom part is slightly water resistant (as in, when a dog peed on the hardwood floor right next to the bed I was able to pick the bed up and the pee hadn't soaked into the foam at all, and my current dog chews and licks his toys on it and the microfiber dries easily without staining). This bed blends in well with nicer furniture and isn't visually obnoxious, which I really like. I removed and washed the cover once and it seems to have held up. There were some wrinkles from being squished into the box and washing it softened those, and now that the bed is getting use the wrinkles have come out of the fabric. My only complaint about the bed is the smell when you first open it - it smells absolutely awful. It takes a good few days to air out, so if you can, buy this during the nicer weather months when you can leave windows open to let the chemically smell dissipate. I would recommend opening the box outside if you can and removing the foam inner from the liner and airing it all out for at least a few days when you first get it (the foam is the part that smells, so be sure to remove the inner padding from the cover to really let air get to this, just taking the bed out of the box isn't enough). The smell is much less offensive (pretty much gone) now that the bed has aired out and been used, but I do wonder about health concerns/issues and the off gassing of this product (which I think would be similar to any other memory foam product).I first gave this bed 3 stars because of the smell, but I'm actually considering buying another smaller one for the dog crate because I really like it. It looks great, my current pup loves it (56 lb boxer/rottie mix) and is holding up well so far, so I've upgraded my review to 4 stars and I would give it 5 if it were not for the terrible smell at first.Update January 2017:Even though this bed has been used daily from July until recently, we had to throw it out this week. Our boxer/rottie, up to 62 lbs (he's filling out and putting on muscle) recently had his only accident due to atypical circumstances and peed straight through the bed. If this bed gets soiled, there is no way to clean it. I contacted the manufacturer for advice, and they suggested spot cleaning, which does not work if the spill penetrates the surface. I tried taking out the memory foam and airing it out, spraying it with pet odor removing enzymes and sprinkling a baking powder and oxygen based powder pet odor absorber on it. I left the foam spread thin on towels for five days, alternating treatments, and could not get the smell out. Because the revain price for the bed is reasonable, we decided to keep the cover and toss the guts (we can put pillows in the cover or keep it as a 2nd cover for another bed). I am not sure if we will be replacing it with the same bed or something different. After having had this bed for 9 months and in 6 months of constant use, I can say its a good bed for the price you pay on revain. I checked other beds at the pet store and they cost more and don't look nearly as nice as this one. This bed is one of the nicest looking pet beds I have seen and goes really well with contemporary furniture. It is well made, with even, solid stitching and attention to detail, and the cover is microsuede so it is an elegant looking material that can be removed and machine washed and dried. The cover is durable enough for a non-destructive pet (our dog chewed his Nylabone and toys on this bed, ran across it while chasing his Kong in the house, and slept on it every night) but will get very faint stains on it over time and ours ended up with a 1 inch rip on the surface. If your dog likes to chew beds it will certainly destroy this one in no time, but if your dog respects your furniture this bed can certainly handle slightly dirty paws and saliva. This bed will slide easily across a hardwood floor - our dog crashed it into our side tables and knocking things over a few times when he ran over it while chasing a toy. Some other Brindle beds claim to have a non-slip texture on the bottom of the bed, but this one does not. The inside memory foam is in four compartments separated by baffles but the individual shredded pieces vary in size and are nearly impossible to clean - the manufacturer does not recommend it. It is like opening a box full of styrofoam packing peanuts and then trying to shove them all into a pillowcase. I feel bad throwing it out, but it is really not salvageable. In summary:PROS:Best looking dog bed I have found, goes great with contemporary furniture, does not look obnoxiousCover cleans up easily and is removable and machine washable, low pile microsuede texture doesn't trap dirt (but will hold fine dog hairs)Well cushioned and comfortable, our dog loved this bed and it supported his 62 pounds without issueDurable enough for repeated use by a dog that doesn't chew his/her bedsWell made, solid stitching and detailed constructionGood value for money, revain price is reasonableCONS:Terrible odor when you first unpack the bed, odor dissipates after airing the bed outCannot handle large spills, the bed interior is impossible to clean, no waterproofingSlippery on smooth floors, lacks non-slip bottom surfaceNot chew proof, would be easily destroyed by a dog that likes to chew bedsMaterials are not biodegradable, recyclable, or environmentally friendly, so if you have to throw the bed out, it will sit in a landfillUpdate May 2018: We ended up buying a second version of this bed, and it did not fluff up as much as our previous bed. Our dog never seemed to like it as much and didn't seem as comfortable on it as he did his first bed. We recently threw out the second bed because of the cleaning issue. I periodically removed the bed cover to machine wash it, but there is no way to clean the interior of this bed and it just smelled like dog. We actually have a very clean dog that doesn't have a strong doggy smell at all, and he would lie down on this bed after a bath and just smell more doggy than he had 10 minutes ago. I tried putting deodorizing spray and powder on it and letting it sit in the sun hoping the UV light would kill some bacteria, but it still just smelled like concentrated dog. The final straw was when there was a spill that soaked through the cover and into the memory foam. Note: If you catch a spill (or pee or vomit) right away it will bead off, but if it has the chance to sit for any length of time it will soak through rather quickly. Once something gets past the cover, you just can't get it out of the bedding material. Also, we ended up having two covers for the bed and at some point one of the covers got pretty mangled in our washing machine (it's a high efficiency side load washer), I'm not really sure why. We've never had our washer damage any other items, including down sleeping bags, performance clothing, lingerie, and other more fragile materials. Even though we really loved the look of this bed (it went so well with our decor) we really can't justify buying another one. I'd rather buy a bed I can wash that will last more than a year than continually buy this bed and throw memory foam into a land fill every time this bed starts to stink. This bed looks great but just isn't well suited to long term use unless you don't mind dog smell and nothing ever spills on the bed.I originally gave this bed three stars, then upgraded it to four stars, and have now dropped my review back down to three stars.
