When it heats up, the metal strip is on.
When heated, the metal strip on the underside expands faster than the plastic body, causing the two parts to separate. I haven't found any glue that holds the two pieces together. The heating element in the cup gets so hot that a burnt crust remains on the bottom of the cup, which is very difficult to remove. It will heat a full mug in about 40 minutes.
