I recently bought the S4000 after reading extensive reviews. It really came down to Nikon or Canon S1400. Canon was almost too small, so I went for Nikon. I already had 2 other digital cameras, both Canon, but I needed one that could easily fit in my bag. The purchase coincided with our family trip to Disney World where I took about 1,000 photos. The good first - the size, feel, battery life and 3-inch touchscreen are all positives. It is convenient to use in automatic mode. I had no problem charging the camera and taking photos all day. However, I have to agree with many negative things I've read about the camera from other owners/reviewers. What disappointed me the most was the speed. When you take a photo, you really can't take another one for almost 5 seconds. This is especially annoying when you're trying to photograph your child with Mickey Mouse, for example! You take a picture and have to queue for "One more, just a second, don't move!" while people wait behind you. Finally, on the road, I switched to "Sport" mode and just held the button down. This allowed me to take a picture about every 1-2 seconds. No expectations. The photos I took on the street turned out great! No problem with them. But inside? Well, not great. I confess I could probably read up what settings are best for indoor shots. But most point-and-shoot cameras will adjust to this automatically. I won't say the photos were a disaster; but they could certainly be better. As for the video, it really didn't work. I've had two occasions where I shot indoors in video mode and both times the camera just stopped. Before I say that the video doesn't work at all, I need to do a little more experimenting. I will say that I have never had a problem shooting videos with my Canons. But none of them have 720p HD capability. Maybe the SD card needs to be formatted? I do not know. I would like to see if others have video problems like mine. As I point out in the title of the review, you pretty much get what you pay for. $110 is a very good price. The size is great if you don't want to carry a large camera strapped to your shoulder for 12 hours while wandering around the Magic Kingdom. The screen is excellent and in general the images are decent. If you're looking for a cheap camera that fits in your front pocket and aren't too concerned about the speed of capturing multiple shots, the S4000 can help.
