Great for studio and live performances, overkill for casual listening

Comic tip about being a pair of headphones (calling SkullCandy headphones/earbuds in-ear is like AM radio to call it high fidelity) and that it costs quite a bit Penny doesn't emphasize that these are in-ear monitors - and the cost reflects the fidelity and performance of the driver, the fact that the frequency response curve isn't overly colored by the transducer and reproduces what is accurate enough for you to possibly hear things that kids who listen to MP3s on their cell phones with cheap refillable headphones never notice, or use muting effects such as bleeding, phase issues, harmonic distortion, and other artifacts. These are professional reference in-ear monitors and cheaper than the custom ones that are made with the hearing care professional's hand-made impressions. If you only listen to music and are not a serious (any) audiophile, musician or audio engineer, you can achieve a similar goal of reference sound with the Sony MDR-7506 or V6 kit, AudioTechnica AT20M to AT50M etc. For listening is a set of semi-open headphones or over-ear headphones like the Grado and AKG are less tiring, and the $20 earbuds are great for casual, non-critical listening. No need to miss a mortgage payment or eat ramen. If you need isolation and quality, and prefer in-ears over on-ears (live performances spring to mind; protects your hearing by allowing you to adequately hear the mix), these are a good choice if you don't fall want a thousand or two on portable disposable headphones.
