Damn if you have a pen because a) it's very difficult to get the pen out of the holder and b) the pen can't be charged while it's in the holder because it's on the wrong side of iPad. Therefore, after trying to pull it out, you will find that it is not charged. And you'll be damned if you don't have a pen, because the pen holder area on the case isn't rigid enough, making the case uncomfortable to hold and unsupported when there's no pen in the holder. So if you don't have a pen, it's impractical. Even worse, it's on the same side as the lid, which is where you'll hold it if you're right-handed.
