For this price this is an excellent buy. I bought this for a 2 week Rocky Mountain hike and found it to be the combination of performance I was looking for. I liked the elevation gain feature (set zeros when I started in the morning and watch the base camp change higher/lower) and the elevation history feature. The altitude reading was good enough for my use (range 7,000 to 12,500 feet). The compass was accurate enough to get you within 10 degrees of the cardinal points, but it can't be used effectively for direction finding or detailed navigation, but it's good enough to tell you if you're going in the right direction . But before you head out, make sure you follow the instructions on how to calibrate it (which basically means spin it for a minute or two). The white-on-black numbering took a little getting used to, but it looks cool and is easy to read even in bright sunshine (and I need 1.5x readers, so that's saying something!). The temp reading was +/- 5 degrees - when I wore it loosely on my backpack strap (otherwise my wrist's body temp would blow it away). The alarm clock was good and loud enough to get my tired ass off the counter. The controls were consistent and natural. I agree with others that they are not as durable as more expensive watches. The bezel and glass will scratch and rattle if you're not careful. Buttons are often too easy to press in normal use. So it's worth the money. This is now part of my main camping gear and I will be buying this for my son so he will stop bothering me to borrow mine!
