Weak plastic that looks like a bag.
The protective mask is not rigid as it looks in the photos and in the description it sounds like it. Although my toddler loves the hat, the main reason I bought this hat was for the face mask. A rigid protective mask that is attached to the inside next to the headgear would be ideal.

- The unisex style may not appeal to boys or girls.
