When I read that these radios have a range of 23 miles I was thrilled. Not because I ever hoped to actually get that far, but because I hoped they would cover at least a half mile in town. So I bought them and we did two tests. At first my wife was sitting in a chair in our house and I was driving in my car. About half a mile away we were still able to communicate. She's at our house, I'm in the car. I feel they worked well considering there was a lot of other houses, shops, trees, other electrical interference etc between her and me. The second test was a trip to the mountains with me and my wife in our car, my friend and his wife in the car wagon. Other. Each of us had a Cobra CX312 radio. I was very happy with their performance. Realize that no radio will work much further than maybe a mile or two if there are thick trees, buildings, hills or whatever in the way. The only way you can go 23 miles is when you are on absolutely flat ground and there is absolutely nothing between you and anyone else with a different radio, and I mean nothing! No trees, bushes, telephone poles, cables, etc. I'm very skeptical about that too. What makes me happy about these two radios is that even when there were a lot of different things between me and the other radio, I was able to communicate effectively with the other party who had the other radio when needed. Pros: Decent battery life, decent signal strength, very happy with performance and if I had to buy 2 more radios I would buy them again. I had similar radios.
