We just used this as a guest book at our wedding. The frame was solid and the back COULD come off quite easily. We've had rude wedding guests framing misplaced hearts so I had to cut the backing off with a butter knife to remove it and it came out clean and easy. I later just poured some hot glue in and replaced the backing. I'll say hearts bleed, even with sharp points. I bought another bag of hearts (that wasn't enough) that were a bit thicker but still fit. They had applied a gloss that prevented the markers from bleeding, so they looked a lot better.
