Great mic for portable recording and other uses

A few other actors I know have recommended this mic including some instructors at Kalmenson so I bought it a few months ago to help a small, but great mic to have on the go use. I use it with my iPhone 5S and my MacBook. Happy! This is a great little mic. I have a "Deep Movie Trailer" voice and this mic is great for it, comparable to my AKGs or Schoeps. Today I used it for the video audition on camera of an Ecocast filmed on iPhone. The mic was bolted to the tripod with the iPhone and I was 3-6 feet away - the audio was clear and tight and no post-cleaning was required. In fact, I was able to submit what was recorded on the iPhone and the Apogee mic for listening without any edits or corrections. Just for the record, I've been a sound professional since the early 1980's. I have a dozen mics including Sennheiser (816 and 416), Schoeps (MK41), AKG, etc. This Apogee mic suits them well, both in sound and build quality. Size and very solid construction. Excellent build quality.2) Easy to use with any USB/Lightning cables you might need.3) Great sound, comparable to other high quality microphones.4) Quiet, low-noise preamp, low self-noise, clean output.5) Built-in Over the Headphone connection allows you to monitor without delay. Neither good nor bad: 6) A separately sold special housing is required, although it does not accommodate a third-party pop-up screen. It protects the microphone, mini stand and extra cables well. 7) Microphone not to blame - In some apps like Audacity you need to make sure the microphone is selected as Audacity doesn't necessarily use the system selected microphone. .Weak: 8) I wish it had a roll off filter. I use the mic very close up for some things and the result is too much bass like most cardioid mics. mic.10) In my opinion the mic should at least come with a foam windscreen, but there isn't one. I'm using a third party nylon screen, that's fine. Pop sensitivity is the same as most mid- to large-diaphragm mics, so some sort of close-up screen is useful. I know Apogee wants to be "green" and not use unnecessary packaging, but really, folks, the box should have a tamper evident seal! with my iPhone or MacBook. To be honest, I would rather use it at home with my MacBook for a quick listen than run the whole studio.

Pros
  • Microphones and accessories
Cons
  • Waiting too long
