This is an overview of the Fluval U1 filter for the Fluval U1 pump Sponge shaped to it fits on the Fluval Filter U1, no more, no less. It works great on U1. There is no organic environment here, no coal, nothing to see here but a sponge. (I think U2 and higher models have more sophisticated filtration.) I use my U1 as a cleaning aid before changing the water. I remove the fish, dip the U1 in the tank, plug it in, and then scrub the substrate with a turkey broom, which blows all sorts of nasty debris out of the substrate and hangs it in the water for the U1 to suck it up. . I do this until the water is clear enough. This may require removing the U1, rinsing the filter under running water and then reinstalling it, especially the first time. Then I do the usual partial water change. and let it dry. It does not need to be replaced as long as it cleans well under running water. Note: When you try this method, the first time you will be completely disgusted with the amount of dirt in the substrate, which you probably thought was as clean as snow. Keep calm and don't strive for perfection in the first week. Everything gets better as you repeat this technique over time. Most importantly, in my experience at least, these filters last a very long time without replacement if you rinse them thoroughly between uses. They're just sponges.
