I had a special place where we just needed a light that was easy to control and didn't require any wiring or hard wiring. These little lights work great. You can work without a remote, but the remote offers some extra features like adjusting the brightness level and adding a timer. In my case, I just hold the remote close to the light so we don't have to reach out to turn it on or off. The only reason I'm deducting a star is because I wish they were designed to use AA batteries and not AAA batteries. . I have a lot of rechargeable AAs, but I had to buy more rechargeable AAAs. I know it might have something to do with keeping them small, but they wouldn't add as much volume. Updated 11/21/18. I deducted another star because the battery life seems to be rather short. I would say a maximum of 4 hours at altitude. I keep switching batteries to the ones I use a lot. Also, the fact that they use an odd number of batteries doesn't help: if you're using rechargeable batteries, you probably have a charger that works best when you're charging an even number of batteries at once.
