My closet already has a closet system and I needed to add shoe storage in the middle. The posts themselves are well weighted, but the supports aren't the best. They don't seem to "fit" completely against the vertical bars, and a simple touch can cause them to fall off if the rack isn't already in place. Once switched on, everything is fine and stable enough to use without fear of breaking down. For me, my shoes are 11W wide, which is about 4.5 inches wide, so I can only fit 3 pairs of shoes on each shelf. With the extended vertical bar installed, I would use 5 shelves (probably 6 if I wasn't using regular shelf for my bags). With about three slits between each row, there was plenty of room for my bootie-style shoes and heels. In any case, they looked like shop windows. I haven't had any issues with weight or falling shelves with any of my shoes, which I'm very happy about. It wobbled when I took my shoes off, but I can deal with that. I would personally suggest regular shelves if you need a solid surface to store your shoes.
