Review on Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED Zoom Lens with Auto Focus - Ideal for Nikon DSLR Cameras by Hemant Hemant ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The best I ever used, recommend it to everybody.

I have been using the lens for several years, it works in conjunction with the D7100. I looked at a lot of options before buying, both alternative ones from Nikon, and from Sigma with Tamron, but none of them can be compared with him in quality. It is worth saying right away that this lens is a melee weapon for reportage shooting. When buying it, you need to understand how you will use it, otherwise it will become an expensive and unjustified purchase. There are several features in working moments: firstly, at 17mm there is barrel-shaped distortion, and starting from 35mm and up to 55mm - it goes on increasing pincushion, but moderate (both one and the other can be easily corrected in the RAW converter, if you shoot in RAW); secondly, aperture 2.8 sharpness - good / excellent over the entire focal range in the center, but the quality varies at the edges, in particular 24mm, where the image as a whole does not look good (this only applies to 2.8, at 5.6 everything is already ok); thirdly, the maximum image sharpness is achieved at aperture 5.6 - 8.0, over the entire focal range (there is no wave-like increase in quality, starting from 5.6 there is high sharpness and holding up to 9.0 inclusive), fourthly, it is important to remember that the range is 17-55mm fair for CROP, but the EGF will still be ~ 25-82mm and as a "width" it will not work. Of the minuses, the following should be noted: a rather large weight, the absence of a stabilizer (it would be useful when shooting handheld without a flash on a covered aperture), narrowness of application (in terms of: you can’t put it on Full Frame) and the biggest minus is the price, now (November 2022 .) heavy ~ 80 thousand. for CROP, it’s a clear overkill, despite the quality, so it’s better to look for a used option (you can find a good option with a ~ 50% discount) and check it thoroughly before buying it for front / back focus and the rest. As a result, we have an excellent lens, with a mildly overpriced price that would be justified if it fit on FF, but in the current situation it is only suitable for photographers who want to have the maximum result on CROPS on a Zoom lens.

Pros
  • Color reproduction, sharpness (see comments), aperture ratio 2.8 (with reservations), dust and moisture protection, build quality and materials. The lens belongs to the professional line of Nikon lenses, as evidenced by the gold ring at the front lens + the diameter of the filters is also "professional" 77mm.
Cons
  • Price, weight, only for CROP, no stabilizer (VR), age of the model (probably in the near future there will be an ate with the "E" and VR index). Despite the aperture, it will not work to use the lens as a "portrait", there are at least two reasons: 1) not a "portrait" range of focal lengths; 2) even at the maximum focal length (55mm), the quality and perception of the image (flatness) cannot be compared, even with 85mm / 1.8 G (D) from Nikon, which, by the way, costs a third of the new 17-55mm.
