Do not buy this item, we have replaced it 3 times!

Please don't buy this for your cats if you have extreme scratching posts. We bought this product from the grocery store, it was destroyed within 2 months, bought a replacement (this one) online, we had 2 months and recently bought another one to replace. The newest one is quite worn but still in decent condition. Every few weeks I have to grab the scissors and "shave off" the mail. I have 3 cats, one of which lives alone in my room (she hates other cats and older ones). She is about 11.5 years old and has no claws on her front paws. We nailed her before we heard about any problems and such but luckily she never had any problems and no pain. Anyway, she has the first scratching post we ever bought. This one broke the ball as soon as he started and started not looking so good. But I "shaved" it and it lasts a long time since my older cat can't "scratch" it. Although she likes it. However we have two younger kittens a year old and 8 months old who love to play. They have completely destroyed the previous scratching posts. We still have both but you can see the jamb for yourself as the carpet has been half scratched. The rope is decent and seems to be holding up a lot better, but still not the best. Once the carpet is completely removed from the post we buy a large thick rope to wrap it around. I have to "shave off" each of the posts every few weeks because they look absolutely awful. Our kittens still have front nails but we trim them regularly and also put claw covers on them but they still ruin the posts. We just bought another branded shelf about a week ago and it still looks the same. I shaved the previous posts about a week ago and made them more normal. You don't look normal anymore. I ONLY give this product 2 stars because it was really easy to put together but the ball broke off on all three posts and it's light weight so I recommend putting it in a corner or at least against a wall. Not very impressed with this product.
