Not very bright bulbs with different wattage

Bought this kit to replace the taillights on my '09 KLR 650. However, I can confirm that they are a perfect fit for the 2nd gen KLR. There are some serious issues. Lightbulbs - lightbulbs of 10 watts. Normal 20 watts. These bulbs are not as bright as the standard bulbs. And the big problem is that they flash quickly because they have different current draws. They blink so fast that they don't seem to reach full brightness before turning off again for the next cycle. I think maybe a new relay would help, but if that's your thing I'd suggest getting some good quality LED turn signals instead. The bulbs are also different sizes, so you can't just swap out the bulbs to fix this problem. The price is right, but this small detail is disappointing. Update: I was able to find a workaround but a 20 minute project turned into 2 hours. What I did was take the wires and connector from the worn original OEM signal and put them in a new housing. The base fits perfectly, but the reflector lens does not fit the larger stock bulb. I enlarged the hole of the new reflector lens with a dremel. Then a new reflector lens would be put on a normal lamp. So now my rear turn signal has OEM guts, but the stem and reflector are new. This worked pretty well and fixed the fast blinking and low brightness issues, but it was a lot more work than I wanted. Still beats the $100 they want for some OEM signals. I will buy another set and do the same on the front so they match. As other reviewers have noted, they are slightly smaller than standard signals.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
