Pretty Dry for Kids

"Heidi" Review Hot Toasty Rag October 5, 2018 Like every other little girl in America, I grew up listening to Shirley Temple's version of Heidi. When I was twenty, I rented a 1968 TV version and was shocked at the plot changes. How dare they! I thought. Well, I recently read the original novel and I have to apologize. Shirley Temple's version doesn't follow the book very well. All "changes" are taken directly from the book. A little orphan girl is brought to a terrible grandfather in the Swiss Alps. He's a social misfit, but she wins him over because she's so charming. Her adventures continue as she meets new friends including a blind village woman, a local shepherd and a wealthy disabled child. Although this is an incredibly popular children's book, I never thought I would read it as a kid. It's very dry and many of Heidi's actions seem repetitive and don't lead to a larger goal. I didn't like the original novel and next time I want some Heidi I'll settle for Shirley.
