Review on πŸͺ’ Merkur MK-4700 Classic Double Edge Safety Razor by Jamie Denison

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Looks soft so I use feather blades with great success, YMMV

For those not too fond of reading, for me this razor is soft (I'm new to DE at least) and with a The sharp blade, like a feather, causes less irritation and is comfortable with a little dexterity for a close shave (3 passes for BBS) and minimal nicks. The handle is ribbed with small accents that sparkle like small diamonds, a beautiful touch. The size I'd call medium, a little heavier but with a softer razor you're going to need it, at least for me. Now to the readers. Also). Like many others, I was intrigued by the creation of the 5+ blades, but the attractive price of the cartridge and the fact that my electric wet shave is better made me reconsider. My best friend said he went back to traditional DE and experimented with blades and razors and was happy with the results. So I ended up in a razor shop in Tasmania contemplating replacing the block and foil for my electric razor. I was on holiday and using a 3 blade disposable wonder to reduce packing space but I saw a German made Golddachs DE razor in front of me. So I decided it was time to give it a try. A chat with a very helpful staff member got me out the door with a new razor, soap, brush, styptic pen and blades before I knew it. So why this long diatribe? Well my skin is weirdly sensitive, that's the best I can describe. He traditionally tolerated a pass with the blade, so the wet shave was either dark and dark or a red bloody rash. Well, I've had a few lessons. I really liked the gold and of course I had to buy the sharpest blades on the planet (feathers) and after getting the Mercur I find this gold a bit aggressive. So much so that I swear I can rip a piece of concrete apart with one wrong move. Not quite what you would expect from a user with sensitive skin. Blood was shed but I am recovering quickly and the quality of the shave was great and there was no rash! The adjustment period to this combination (gold roof and feather) brought the ultimate respect for the sport. Youtube to the rescue, then shaving scrub, shaving oil, cold conditioner and balm and I'm good to go with a clean shave. It's grown from here with a few creams and the like, but I find it a staple for those with oddly sensitive skin. Shaving has become a ritual that must not be interrupted or rushed. The quality of the shave and the condition of the skin have improved significantly. So, the collection includes other suitable tools (roof brushes, bowls, coasters, exotic creams, a set of blades), one of which is 47c. I've loaded 47 quills (who ever called this blademaster a quill, either a sadist or a genius) and I'm getting to work. I wasn't sure if he was cutting anything until I checked. At first the razor has a soft feel unbeknownst to me but the tip takes care of that what a fantastic combination. The weight and grip work great for me again. Goldachs is now delegated to the service where I need more aggression (mercury can, but may need a different passport) and travel (it's a bit shorter) and loose areas are handled by mercury for everyday use. It took me three weeks before I hurt it with a charged pen, so again I feel like it's a mild cure. So finally, good work, mercury! What do you do next? UPDATE 9/29/2016: This 47th razor is my daily razor. After reviewing more of my blade samples I found the Astra Superior Platinum to be the blade for me in 47c. Feathers are good but I get three shaves from them like most others. After three shaves it's Jeckle and Hyde when I hit the fourth (but some claim to be using the same blade after 6 months). I easily get 4 to 5 shaves from Astras, after which I throw the blade away "just like that". Astras is 1/2 the price of Feathers, including the double shave option, which is a 75% discount per shave (about 3 cents per shave, no soap etc). I've found that I'm also less irritated by Astras when I make mistakes. On the other hand, if you mess up the Feather technique, irritation is inevitable. The key here, the 47 is heavy enough to NOT require any extra pressure, something (I) have to remember.
