Batteries are not required in the pen! Just take it out of the box and update your drivers and you'll be fine. I had an issue with my old computer where I couldn't see the supplied program's interface, but I was still able to calibrate and reset my 8 user keys, so it worked! Worth the money, I bought it for digital art and it works great if you have the confidence to draw and look at the screen at the same time. I had to enable admin rights to make it work with Photoshop, but it wasn't bad at all. Overall, it can definitely be a great starting pad and professional art. Amazing even for beginners. Also, it's bigger than I thought it would be, which is good.
