That's how I like it. The flash setting should be used rather than steady on with a studio flash because another reviewer said the white rod retaining mechanism had melted and he couldn't close the shade. I love the fact that I can close this softbox in seconds and store it in a compact place or carry it around on site without pulling the taut wires out of the softbox just to make it compact. You need to be careful with this as it is thinner than a sturdy square softbox. I love it and can't wait to buy a bigger one for my studio.
