Nice shelf, lackluster instructions

I needed a corner shelf that I could run speaker wire on and sometimes support the weight of a fat cat on a Boy Scout. The installation is quite simple, but some details are missing. Caveats: My measurements may differ from yours, so do your prep work; and please make sure you don't poke any electrical wire or water pipe into the hairpin - Screwdriver: #2 Phillips - Tape measure - Spirit level - Pencil Installation: 1) Mark the wall where you want the top of the shelf to be. Subtract 3/16" - this is the height the slats need to be or the shelf will end up 3/16" taller than intended. Mark a level line on the wall from the corner to a few inches from the corner. 2) Mark one bar as left and the other as right. Then mark one of the long, narrow sides with "TOP". Why? Because the spikes are not the same size and the holes in the spikes are not in the same places. If you mix up left and right or which side is up, the holes you drill in the wall will not line up. See my photos for better understanding. 3) The shelf has cutouts at the bottom where you are supposed to screw the shelf into the slats. Be careful how far from the corner you place the spikes. The shelf has long slots that make it seem like you have a lot of wiggle room when placing the spikes. If you want the screw holes to align properly, you need to mount the planks a certain distance from the wall. In my case, the shelf mounting holes were 5.5" and 14.25" from the corner. Make sure the peg sits between these two screw holes. If not, no big deal, you just have to drill your own holes in the bottom of the shelf. 4) After completing all of these calculations, align the top of the left plank with the line you created earlier. , then mark the position of the screw holes. You can gently push the 9/64" bit into the holes to mark the wall. Do the same with the right board. * Drill holes in the wall. If you happen to come across a stud, a 9/64-inch drill bit will do. Otherwise, use a 5/16" drill bit to drill holes for the included wall anchors. 6) Insert the wall anchors into the holes (ignore if you're lucky and drive in 4 studs instead) 7) Assemble the boards 8) Slide the shelf onto the brackets and secure with the screws provided.
