under $15 from Revain), not to mention the expense if a mechanic comes to my house. First, unplug the refrigerator's power cord from the wall and remove the bottom cover where the compressor is located. Assuming your compressor shutdown relay/capacitor assembly is faulty (mine had a bad odor), remove and discard the old block assembly after cutting the power wires to the unit. I had red and white wires but yours may be different. In any case, these two cut wires supply 120VAC to the red and black wires of the starting capacitor bank. Strip the insulation from the two cut wires and connect them to the pre-stripped red and black wires from the starter kit capacitor using the nuts provided. It doesn't matter which of the pre-insulated red and black wires from the capacitor pack are connected to the power wires cut from the old relay, as the polarity of the AC power doesn't matter. There are 3 starter kit capacitor wires that need to be connected to the compressor. Make sure you correctly identified the compressor pins. There are 3 pins coming out of the compressor. The two pins should have a resistance of about 10 ohms between each other so that the remaining pin is "common". The remaining 3 wires of the capacitor bank have spade lugs that can be easily attached to the compressor terminals. The flat end of the black wire on the condenser goes to the common on the compressor. The resistance measured between the common and the other two pins on the compressor should be approximately 6 ohms and 4 ohms respectively. The flat tip of the white wire from the capacitor goes to the 6 ohm contact (start winding), and the red tip of the wire connects to the 4 ohm contact (work winding). Test the repair by plugging the refrigerator into an outlet to make sure the compressor is working. Wait about 15 minutes to ensure that the refrigerator has cooled down, then unplug the refrigerator, secure the capacitor assembly with a nylon strap, attach the back cover of the refrigerator, connect the refrigerator to the wall and slide it into place. There are many DIY videos on YouTube but be careful how the 3 pins are connected on the compressor. I say this because mine was upside down compared to what most videos show. My fridge has been working so far (approx. 2 weeks) without any further problems. At the moment I recommend the RCO410 capacitor kit. If that doesn't work for you, all it takes is a little time and less than $15. Much luck!
