I wanted a solar unit to install on a pole I erected on the bridge over the fish pond. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find one to my liking so I ended up going with one that had to be hardwired to 110 – this one.The lamp arrived in good shape. I had already run the electric line and done all the prep work so when it arrived I was ready to install it immediately. The lamp is not big and heavy like an old school goose neck, but it is built solid enough and heavy enough that I tossed the flimsy mounting hardware aside feeling that in this particular situation it wouldn’t be supportive enough for the lamp and I just screwed the lamp to the pole using deck screws through the two holes in the lamps base. I then just glued the two nuts on for aesthetic reasons. After installation I waited for the sun to set. The lamp came on, but it turned out to be brighter than I had expected or wanted. The bright light distracted from the cool tranquility of sitting on the deck and looking out over the pond. I mean, this thing is bright! I bought some stained glass spray paint and painted the plastic dome covering the bulbs. The paint is transparent. The more coats applied the darker the color, but it remains transparent. Unfortunately, no matter how much of this transparent paint I sprayed it barely affected this bright light. I ended up using a regular dark blue spray paint. The light is so bright that it still made it through this paint, but I finally had the dim blue result I was looking for. That bright light attracted a zillion bugs, but toning it down to the dim blue turned out to be unattractive to most of them.If you want a very, very bright white light that comes on at dusk and stays on all night then this is your ticket. If you really like this lamp, but don’t want it super bright then you’ll need to get inventive.I really like the lamp. Being somewhat handy and fairly creative, I found the installation and minor modifications easy. I do wish it were available with a warmer dimmer light, but I took care of that.
