Very cheap design for this money

I wanted a gift for my husband for his birthday. He just needed a table next to his chair for a drink. After building and punching holes in the top I need to cover, not sure if this is trustworthy to hold much. Very cheap construction and no instructions just a diagram that doesn't show how to insert the nails from the top - so I figured the nail needs to be pierced - no - needs to be on the bottom so I need to get a cover to cover those to hide holes from above.
