With the advent of tracking tags, Tile was originally the go-to name for a seemingly broad market. I used to rely on tiles for the first few years until I got tired of replacing the whole device when the battery died after a year. The backup plan was a fairly expensive form of subscription that once put me off the backup battery alternatives. The most noticeable thing was that now unnamed devices are being rebranded by different distributors. In any case, the tile responded over time and initially made the batteries interchangeable in top-level sport, albeit at a rather high price. Now I had a bunch of necessities on my doorstep and I was ready to look at them again. The kit includes a redesigned sleek, thin case that's now in a credit card form factor (as opposed to the original boxy design). The thickness has been slightly reduced and can now be compared to two stacks of credit cards. The idea is to put it in your wallet to keep an eye on it. This might be an option for larger models, but the thickness and rigidity of the thin case makes it uncomfortable for me to use in my somewhat minimalist wallet. However, my backpack did not have these limitations and is now traceable. Essentials does not contain a high-end sport but a mate tile. It's not waterproof and it's not as attractive as a Sport, but the CR1632 battery is now... you guessed it. removable! Another improvement is that the Mate tile can now connect to your phone at a distance of up to 200 feet (double that of the original). It's too far away for a louder sound to matter, but overall it helps block out background noise more effectively. The two-tone design with silver buttons is also more eye-catching than the drab original (but far from sporty). The bundle includes two new devices that aren't even listed on the Tile website (yet). A tile decal is a very different concept than a tile. The battery is not replaceable, but is designed for 3 years. At the same thickness as the Mate, it's round and significantly smaller than the Mate (or, more importantly, the even larger Sport). There is no attachment loop as it is designed to stick to anything with an adhesive backing as the name 'sticker' would suggest. Also new (to me) is the premium service, which costs $2.50 per month if paid annually, or $2.99. /month if you go from month to month. This service includes features such as smart alerts, extended warranty, location history (30 days) and free battery replacement. Of course, the latter only applies to interchangeable devices, but Smart Alerts are interesting. This is a type of geofence that essentially determines your location (based on your smartphone) and the location of connected devices. The tile uses the message "Looks like you left the house without your keys" as an example. In any case, I won't get far without the keys, but there are certainly applications where you can use such babysitting services. (It's just hard to make it useful for items you only need occasionally and don't bother at other times.) All in all, this is a good choice of different tiling device, although whether it's worth the investment will depend on your application . I am currently torn and may return to make a more definitive judgement.
