Review on πŸ” CIPA 11050 Suction Cup Rearview Mirror, Black, 8x4 Inches by Travis Karren

Revainrating 2 out of 5

May come off windshield

After 2 weeks of mounting to the inside of my boat's windshield, on a long, sunny and hot Florida day, the mirror's suction cup came loose and the mirror fell to the ground, shattering the glass. I pre-cleaned the windshield thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and dried it before attaching the mirror to the windshield. I suspect that despite my cleaning efforts, the moisture from the high humidity on the day the mirror was installed was trapped between the cup and the glass. Perhaps the hot sun and heat that day had created enough pressure between the bowl and the windshield to force the mirror out. Now I'm going to look for a mirror with a mechanical attachment system and not a suction cup. I only gave it 2 stars because the mirror seems to be well made and gives me a great rear view. Yesterday I was advised to put a thin coat of olive oil on a dry suction cup before pressing it against the windshield to keep the mirror from falling off when the sun heats the jar and mug. This method has been reported to work with bird feeders that also use suction cups to hold them to the window pane and that are also exposed to direct sunlight and heat. I have ordered another CIPA 11050 mirror and will give it a second chance with olive oil. I will report the results of the test and hope to increase my rating later.
