When I bought the car, the previous owner replaced this part. It was an unnamed detail, and I soon noticed a coolant leak on the sidewalk. I knew from the remains that it came from somewhere in that part, but I've never been able to pinpoint the exact location. It got worse over time and I figured it couldn't just be the expansion tank. nope I replaced it and my leak is gone. It's also a very good idea if you haven't already done so to replace all parts of the cooling system (thermostat, upper/lower radiator hoses, etc.). The e46 series has known cooling issues and if you replace the expansion tank you can get it all at once too.
