Review on ASUS Designo MX27UC Type C Monitor - Adaptive 50Hz, Flicker-Free, Blue Light, Frameless, HD, 4K Display by Fred Reed

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good monitor - great picture with some features

I've had this monitor for about 6 months. I bought this after trying a Samsung 32 inch curved monitor. Samsung didn't work well with my new Mac Mini (text didn't scale properly) and after a bit of research I settled on this monitor after reviewing LG's 5k monitors. The video performance of the monitor was excellent. I'm an audio/video design engineer and have experience with virtually every type of large monitor available. The Mac Mini drives the display easily via the Thunderbolt 3 ports. I use the monitor for astrophotography and Photoshop and after calibrating it found that the color accuracy was spot on. I'm not a gamer, but sometimes I plug in a Del XPS 15 9570 and run the RC flight simulator program at high resolution/60Hz with no noticeable artifacts. Quirks - The menu controls and menu structure are almost unusable. The way any sane designer has done it is insane. The volume control is hidden somewhere - a bad joke. I don't need any of these controls very often, but using the volume control in an unusable UI, especially when ASUS is touting BO audio technology, is pretty ridiculous. This results in the sound quality of the display speakers. Do not buy this monitor for your speaker system. I'm not sure who worked with Asus on the "ICE" technology at B&O, but I bet they don't have a job anymore. I use an external speaker system. However, if you intend to use an internal speaker system with a newer Mac, plan on connecting a 3.5mm audio cable between your Mac and the display, since the Mac will only interpret the video connection as a monitor and will not inject audio into USB. -C/HDMI connection to display. This is most likely the fault of the ASUS engineers who set the HDCP audio encryption key incorrectly. The lack of any height adjustment on the stand is a bit annoying, but this is solved by placing the monitor on a cheap stand. Image quality that works with both PC and Mac with no video problems (as I've seen) at a reasonable price. Just don't expect concert hall sound from the internal speakers.
