Review on XYZ INVT Inverter Cigarette Lighter by Nick Cleary

Revainrating 3 out of 5

XYZ INVT and WZRELB are the SAME company, 24V Inverter Compare

Summary: This is a 24V 300W inverter. Previously, 6000W and 300W models were reviewed by WZRELB. I also have a 2000W inverter from VOLTWORKS, but using power overnight to provide a small 15W (120VAC) drained my solar/PV system quickly, so I ordered this 300W instead. Previously used one 300W 12V from BESTEK via a 24V/12V converter Observations: 1) The first thing that struck me is the overall form factor, which is very similar (though not exact) to the WZRELB 300W/24V inverter Sticker that says WZRELB, meaning SAME company and product (see photo, one is blue, the other is black). 2) This one has a painted steel body, while Voltworks is a ribbed aluminum profile that dissipates heat better. The primary heatsink is quite large, but has no physical contact with the outer case, so no heat transfer occurs (see WZRELB internal drawing). 3) In the first twelve hours with a load of 15-90W (computer), the ambient temperature is 77°F and the top of the case is 90°F (13°F rise), which feels warm to the touch and the fan does not run. Recommendations: 1) Check DC power cables for loose ferrules and solder for added security. The factory crimp was strong (passed the pull test) and I ran it through a crimping tool for double checking and also added some yellow protective sleeves (instead of the factory heat shrink tubing I had cut off). 2) In general, a pure sine wave inverter is more efficient than a modified sine wave. 3) It is difficult to choose an inverter; too small and you have reliability issues; too large and parasitic power losses become noticeable. Pros: 1) bright display; 2) Cable 10mm^2 with strong cable lugs (stamped 60A); 3) Cons: 1) Some fuses are missing, display says four (4) but I have one (1); 2) The fan doesn't run very often, but it is quite noisy. Verdict: 3 stars for $80. The 3 star rating for this XYZ INVT is based on the failed WZRELB which I gave a 1 star rating, so it's basically a replacement item for the first failed inverter. I will update this review with reliability data in the future.
