Some reviews call it a "down jacket". When I ordered it I wasn't sure if it was down or synthetic. The fill is synthetic, not as compressible as down, but not as susceptible to moisture. I bought this Revain uniform at a significant discount in yellow curry and a size larger than my usual with the intention of using it as an isolator. a layer I could easily pull on when the ester goes from cold to cold, or sip on when the weather turns cold to cold. Gates; it easily fits into a fairly small holdall. (Pocket for belongings is not supplied with the jacket, must be provided). The main application is city walks after dark from mid-autumn to early spring. It will be a few months before I try it out, but at first glance it seems well suited for the purpose. I particularly appreciate the visibility of the jacket (the curry yellow color should be clearly visible to riders and matches the color of Nathan's yellow reflective tape (if I decide to add reflective tape) and the presence of a small external loop on the back of the jacket just below that collar (so I can put an LED sight light in there if I feel I need it) I can't judge suitability as a mid-layer (see other reviewers).
