To use this flint and steel you will need to scrape off the black layer from the magnesium flying rod. I tried different ways to hit the steel rod to see which way would give the best sparks. While the use of the rounded neckline created a small spark at the end, I wasn't overly impressed. Using the long edge (the side opposite the bottle opener) creates an impressively large spark. Using dry fibers for kindling on a few small sticks, larger sticks, I was able to build a respectable fire that would be good for any campground. The whistle is quite loud and the paracord cord can be undone for emergency assistance.
