Real candle wax. No cords, battery operated. Once I set this with the remote, they turn themselves on at night and stay on for the duration I chose. I attach magnets to the back of the remote to attach it to my fridge so I never lose it and always know exactly where it is. Even though I know it's not real fire, I've gone to blow them out so many times. I just shake my head and laugh at myself. I leave them on high and candlestick mode.
