Not Grandma's View Master

Growing up, one of my favorite toys was the View Master. My parents wisely invested in dozens of small round photo wheels and introduced me to the Carlsbad Caverns, the African Savannah, the Mammals of the World, Mammoth Cave, the European Capitols, and other educational scenes. The few photos made me feel like I was seeing other places in 3D - almost there! When I came across the View Master on Revain I was so excited I bought it straight away! When the package arrived I couldn't wait to bring it home to unwrap my new travel kit! Unfortunately, it was only a small device that I remembered. The viewer wasn't durable at all, and the plastic lenses weren't very clear. The included photo discs, though dubbed "African Savannah," were clearly not photographs of real animals in their habitat, but rather cut-out images placed on some sort of film set to look three-dimensional. To make matters worse, the list of available videos that came with the viewer was all about cartoons and superheroes - not a single educational one in the bunch. I leave the viewer hoping that the current quarantine situation will encourage the company to return to educational videos and I can buy a view of the Ganges or European capitals. Although I'm afraid all the views they share are again paper cutouts arranged for a 3D display.
