The bread baking pandemic caused this. There are two things here: do you need to make yogurt and do you need (another) versatile machine in your kitchen? Nobody should make their own yogurt. However, if you have a good source of fresh milk, I find the yogurt from this machine to be really tasty. I think you could argue that this saves money since good yogurt costs more than the milk that goes into it. So, I think you need to make your own yogurt about as much as you need to make your own sourdough. In other words, you don't do it, but if you want to, there's something magical about making it yourself, and it's hard to know if it actually tastes better than store bought or if it's just psychology. But my kids loved it. and when they ate raspberry yogurt with a dash of honey, they were pleasantly surprised that it tasted like store-bought yogurt but with a smoother texture. It takes some effort to prepare and handle, but like baking bread, I imagine it's quicker since it becomes automatic. Now another disposable device. If I had a very small kitchen or if it was an expensive machine I would consider it. But I have a place to keep it which is good value. The little bottles are cute and you can use your Instapot or whatever to do the same, but the convenience of mounting this device in a corner and letting it pop while the yogurt incubates makes it worth it. It's truly disposable unless you're making natto. But I ate as much natto as I wanted to eat in my lifetime (and it wasn't very much). All in all it's great. It's possible that the investment of time will make it easier to buy yogurt over time, but I expect it'll only recover after a few batches, so I'm glad I have it.
