Adhesive pads were used instead of drilling and it turned out great. I found it easier to temporarily tape them in place so I could adjust placement and mark the wall. The back of these pads is very slippery and the adhesive is so strong you really only get one chance to get it right (wish they had spares or at least sold extras). Overall it was painless and they look fantastic. Just be very careful and take your time. Edit: It's been two years, just a few months, since I installed these shelves using the glue method and they look just as good as they did when I installed them. no signs of it peeling off or failing at any point. Incredibly happy with the shelves and would recommend them. the sticky pads are almost invisible and the effect looks like they are just a part of the shower.
