Keeps my arm straight when I'm awake and probably most of the time I'm asleep, but loose or tight, it doesn't prevent me from bending my elbow ; it only adds resistance. I still get numbness and pain first thing in the morning but it's only been a few days that it's also unrealistic to expect it to heal right away. Second, the 2nd tension strap is on the inside of the elbow where the ulnar nerve sits. pinched (i.e. not the best place to attach). Third, and much less important if you have furry friends, the material is similar to fur and hair bands. Fourth, a sturdy outer shell with a split at the inner elbow helped.
