Let me start by saying that I've definitely stuffed my bag with more than recommended. a pocket. It was a bit of a hassle to put them on without lumps, but they fit. I used an Amico White Green Plastic handheld vacuum pump with compressed air for the entire process, resulting in a bag about 4 inches thick. It feels like there is still air to be sucked out, but neither the pump nor the vacuum cleaner can suck out more and since I pack in about 150% of the recommended items, I am extremely satisfied with the end result. My only complaint is that the design requires any clothing item to be hung from a loop attached to the top hook, making the bag longer than the original items placed inside, which can be unwieldy if you have a closet that doesn't it is extra large, like mine. It's also a fantastic space-saving purchase.
